Termite Protection for Architects & Consultants
Vale Pest Group works with architects, building designers, consultants, certifiers and project teams throughout Australia, providing technical support, installation guidance and termite management solutions for commercial and multi-residential developments.
Vale installs the JH Termite Barrier system, which integrates with the building elements below during design coordination and construction documentation.
Designing for Effective Termite Management
Termite management systems are most effective when they are considered during the design phase and integrated into the primary building elements from the outset.
New concrete slabs, wall systems, structural interfaces and perimeter details often provide opportunities to install complete and continuous termite management measures as part of the construction process. Early coordination allows protection systems to be incorporated before these elements are concealed or become difficult to access.
Termite management systems should be incorporated into termite entry points such as service penetrations, construction joints, perimeter interfaces, block and precast connections, lift shafts, stairwells and other critical building details. Considering these entry points during design development can assist project teams in coordinating termite management requirements with structural details, construction methodology and project specifications.
By addressing termite management during the documentation phase, architects and consultants can help minimise installation conflicts, improve constructability and support continuity of the termite management system throughout the completed building.
Primary Building Elements Suitable for Termite Management Integration
Concrete Slabs
New slab construction provide opportunities to incorporate termite management systems before concrete placement, including penetration protection, construction joint protection and under slab applications where required.
External Wall Systems
Perimeter termite protection can be integrated with brick veneer, cladding systems, post frame construction and precast concrete wall systems to maintain a complete and continuous termite management system around the building perimeter.
Structural Details
Construction joints, wall connections, lift shafts, stairwells, precast connections and structural column details can be detailed to maintain continuity of the termite management system where separate building elements meet.
Future Access & Inspection Areas
Design consideration should also be given to maintaining inspection zones and ensuring termite management systems remain visible and accessible where required throughout the life of the building.
Termite Management Integration Points
Effective termite management often requires coordination across multiple building interfaces and construction stages. Depending on the project design, termite management systems may interact with:
Service penetrations
Construction joints
Cutout and infill slab works
Under slab protection
Perimeter areas
Columns, walls & lift shafts
These applications should be considered during design development to ensure termite management measures can be incorporated into the completed structure and coordinated with project documentation.
Documentation & Specification Support
Termite management systems should be supported by appropriate technical documentation to assist project planning, specification development and compliance requirements.
Technical Data Sheets
Product information outlining system applications, installation requirements, typical construction details and performance characteristics.
CodeMark Certification
H Termite Barrier is supported by CodeMark certification, providing a certified compliance pathway under the National Construction Code.
50 Year Warranty Information
Supporting warranty documentation relating to specified termite management systems.

When should termite management be considered during design?
Termite management requirements should be considered during the design and documentation phase to ensure protection measures can be coordinated with structural details, service layouts and construction methodology before construction begins.
What building elements commonly require termite management detailing?
Common applications include concrete slabs, service penetrations, construction joints, perimeter interfaces, under slab systems, precast connections, lift shafts, stairwells and structural column details.
Why is early termite management planning important?
Early planning allows termite management measures to be incorporated into the primary building elements before construction begins, reducing the likelihood of installation conflicts and improving constructability.
How can termite management systems be integrated into building design?
Termite management systems are typically incorporated into concrete slabs, perimeter wall interfaces, structural connections and other key building elements during design development. Early coordination assists with continuity of protection and construction sequencing.
Why are under slab termite management systems commonly specified on commercial projects?
Commercial and industrial buildings often contain large concrete slab areas incorporating multiple saw cut joints, construction joints and service interfaces. As buildings age, these locations can create potential termite entry pathways.
Under slab termite management systems provide continuous protection beneath the slab footprint and assist in managing future termite entry risks associated with slab cracking, saw cut joints, construction joints and building movement.
Why are continuous perimeter details important?
Perimeter termite protection is most effective when it remains complete and continuous around the building perimeter. Gaps, discontinuities or incorrectly detailed areas can compromise the termite management system and create potential concealed entry points. For the perimeter be compliant, i,e., complete and continuous, the barrier must
Can termite management systems be specified during the documentation phase?
Yes. Early specification of termite management systems can assist with coordination, constructability, compliance planning and project delivery.
What documentation supports termite management specifications?
Supporting documentation may include technical data sheets, CodeMark certification, installation details, warranty information and compliance documentation.
Can Vale Pest Group assist during project planning?
Yes. Vale Pest Group regularly works with architects, consultants and project teams to assist with termite management planning, technical documentation and application requirements.

TERMITE MANAGEMENT Provide a termite management system to protect the building and its contents, not just primary building elements, complying with the termite management provisions of the National Construction Code (Performance Requirement B1P1 for Volume One buildings; H1P1 for Class 1 and 10 buildings). System: JH Termite Barrier by JH Envirtech (CodeMark certificate CM20096), installed by an installer trained and registered with the manufacturer, in accordance with the manufacturer's installation requirements. Extent: - Full under slab sheet across the building footprint (where specified). - Collars to all service penetrations through the slab. - Strips to all construction joints, pour breaks and new-to-existing slab junctions. - Perimeter protection at the slab edge and external walls. - Subfloor protection to walls, piers and stumps where the building has a suspended floor. Sequencing: coordinate installation with the pour sequence; each stage to be installed and recorded before concrete is placed. Documentation at completion: certificate of installation; durable notice in the location required by the NCC; marked plans showing the extent of protection; manufacturer's warranty documentation. Maintenance: the owner to arrange inspections at the intervals required by the manufacturer's warranty (at least annually).
